Located on the shore of Lac St Louis, this newly constructed home is a contemporary twist on the classic style of the neighbourhood. Working with the client’s landscape architect, we created a landscape echoes the timeless materials and modern details of the residence.
The lake side of the property features natural stone pathways, extensive gardens and a large elevated terrace. The terrace is clad in natural stone with glass railings, creating the perfect space for entertaining, with spectacular views. This waterfront site brought the challenge of creating a beautiful garden that highlighted the spectacular views while being able to withstand the sometimes-harsh environment of the lakeshore.
Oversized natural limestone slabs were used throughout the garden to create informal pathways with a rustic feel. Large boulders were used to create durable steps allowing access to the water for kayaking and other activities. The plantings give a natural feel to the garden while using a more contemporary blend of textures and foliage. Huge weathered steel planters frame the steps between the terrace and the garden and extend the contemporary details of the residence into the landscape.
The street side landscape features an exposed aggregate concrete driveway, natural stone walkways and landscape walls. Because the driveway represents a large portion of the front property it was important to have a sleek yet subtle appearance that was not too modern for the stone façade and wooden details of the residence. The exposed aggregate concrete was chosen to meet these criteria. While giving a smooth, uniform appearance, the earth tones of the aggregate blend well with the surroundings. Natural stone walkways create generous pathways to the front entrance, welcoming the homeowners and their many guests.
Two natural stone landscape walls were constructed with natural limestone and St Marc limestone copings, matching seamlessly with the details found on the house. These walls create a sense of separation from the street and interesting views from the interior of the house. Weathered steel planters were used to create focal points in the garden and to serve as a border to the rooftop terrace.
